Prompted my Naomi’s email, we sat down with our recruitment specialist team to share a few insights with other job seekers on some of the things they should know about their potential employer before interviewing.

Although it’s entirely impossible to predict what kind of questions you’ll face in the interview, it doesn’t hurt to find out more about your potential employer. After all, there’s a chance you might succeed and actually work there.

How important is research?

Recours Four Kenya is always doing due diligence on its clients in order to find the perfect candidate who not only have the right skills for the job but are likely to fit in the organization.

That’s how important!

Researching before your interview enables you to get an insight into the company’s vision and culture and decide if they’re the right fit for you. You also don’t want to be caught off guard when a question about the company arises plus it’s a great place to start a conversation with your interviewer.

Interviewers interpret knowledge about their company as enthusiasm which can be the very thing that shoes you in but note no one’s asking you to go all FBI.

Here are 3 things to get you started;

  1. The Company’s Product

Products are at the core of every business and every role, no matter how remote, contributes to the success of the product and overall the company’s. Basic knowledge about the company’s product at this stage is critical especially if you’re working in production or sales. So try to have a basic understanding of the product in terms of its process and if they’re ways you can add value to it.

Some of the questions you can try to answer are;

Who is the company’s target consumer? Do I have experience interacting with them?

What is the company’s product? Do I have technical knowledge about its production?

What’s the purpose of the product? Do I believe in it?


  1. Financial State & Market Share

You’re probably asking yourself, how this factors into your interview. But knowing about the financial state of your potential employer is important as it enables you to make a judgement about the job’s security and if a company is likely to retrench people in hard economic times.

In the short term, it aids you during salary negotiations as you’re in a position to tell if your potential employer can afford your salary. Remember though that other factors such as skills and experience count so it isn’t everything.

Private companies do not have to publish their financial statements by law so you can circumvent this little fact by doing research on the company’s market share and gain insight on the company’s competitive advantages.


  1. Working Environment

No one’s exactly asking you to go undercover but it helps to know where you might be working and if you’re likely to thrive in the environment. Factors to consider include working style, personality, motivations etc. The best source for this kind of information is usually employees but take their opinions with a pinch of salt since some of them might be disgruntled.

Social media is also a great way to get an insight into the company’s inner workings if they’re active and get a vibe about their working atmosphere. Though basic, take a look at the company’s career section and training opportunities because at the end of it all, you want a job that helps you progress in your career rather than slows you down.

Remember this is your sales pitch and this is where you can bring together your knowledge of them and your enthusiasm. It is all about why they are great to work for the company and not why you need the job.

Here are 4 key steps to selling yourself into that job:

When you are asked about why you have applied for this role, why you want it etc… start with:

Step 1:

‘This is a great company /organisation because…….’  Everyone likes to be flattered, so tell them why you think they are a good company, what it is you like about the company….

Step 2:

Describe the challenges of the role, even if it is a job that is routine. What are the issues they face in getting someone to do the role well?

Step 3:

Tell them the things that float your boat, the things you have just been doing, the challenges you really enjoy and give some brief examples.

Step 4:

Think about why they might not want to hire you and refute their logic.

CV .Vs. Resume, The Difference

In our line of work and experience, we have come across different kinds of application documents that people submit in order to apply for jobs. However,  we have noted that most people are not aware that there is an actual difference between a CV and a resume when they come speak to us at the Recours Four Kenya Consultants Limited office on 4th Floor Kipro Centre in Westlands. We recently got a client who requested for a Middle East format of CV, this made us sit down and critically analyze the difference between the two and furthermore show how both documents are used worldwide.

What is a CV?

A CV (Curriculum Vitae which means course of life in Latin) is an in-depth document that can be laid out over two or more pages and it contains a high level of detail about your achievements, a great deal more than just a career biography. The CV covers your education as well as any other accomplishments like publications, awards, honors. You also find that the document tends to be organized chronologically and should make it easy to get an overview of an individual’s full working career. A CV is static and doesn’t change especially when applying for the same kind of position in your particular line of work. I usually recommend that one keeps tailoring the CV according to the position being applied for and should always seek for Keywords in that particular application. If you take the time to tailor your CV, the HR or recruiter will take the time to notice it.

What is a Resume?

 A resume, or résumé, is a concise document typically not longer than one page as the intended reader will not dwell on your document for very long. The goal of a resume is to make an individual stand out from the competition. A resume doesn’t have to be chronological, doesn’t have to cover your whole career, doesn’t need to have all your information and is a highly customizable document according to the job you are applying for. A resume is a brief summary of your skills and experience over one or two pages, a CV is more detailed and can stretch well beyond two pages.

So what are the differences between the two documents?

 The major 3 differences between CVs and resumes are:

  • The length
  • The purpose
  • The layout.

I would say the main difference between a resume and a CV is that a CV is intended to be a full record of your career history and a resume is a brief, targeted list of skills and achievements.

Usage around the world:

 A CV is the preferred document of choice in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda. Resumes are often used only when a candidate is applying for a job as a result of a reference – this happens often when a candidate has been refered to a particular job as a result of networking. Resumes can also be used during internal recruitment within Organizations when an employee is seeking to be promoted to another position.

A resume is the preferred application document in the US and Canada. Americans and Canadians would only use a CV when applying for a job abroad or if searching for an academic or research oriented position.

In the UK, Ireland and New Zealand, a CV is used in all contexts and resumes aren’t used at all. The CV prevails in mainland Europe and there is even a European Union CV format which we have currently just started doing for people who want to send applications abroad.

For jobs in Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia they use a middle east format CV which looks very different from a normal CV as it includes a passport size photo and a full length photo. We find this particular CV to be very interesting in appearance and usually quite attractive too.

In Germany, the CV is more commonly known as a Lebenslauf (true to the latin origins) and is the document of choice for jobseekers.

In Australia, India and South Africa, the terms resume and CV are used interchangeably. The term resume is used more for jobs in the private sector and CV is more commonplace when applying for public service positions.

It’s not that hard to convert your document to any of the required styles when seeking for employment and if you hit a brick wall, just ask us for help.
